The Mangrove Route

Monday, 04 May 2026
18:00 - 20:00

Documentary & Panel Discussion

The Mangrove Route explores the link between the eco-climate crisis and migration in and from Senegal. Coastal erosion, soil salinization, and the collapse of artisanal fishing (accelerated by industrial fishing) are dismantling the economic and cultural foundations of entire coastal communities. Filmed in Senegal, Belgium, and Italy, the documentary weaves together field testimonies and geopolitical analysis to show how European Union policies and those of its Member States, from border externalization agreements to the Mattei Plan, claim to address the “root causes” of migration, yet ultimately make routes more dangerous and deadly, exacerbating the very social and environmental crises that drive migration.

After the screening (25min), our panel will explore the realities on the ground, the role of European policy and the urgent action needed to protect vulnerable coastal communities.
